We know that color masterbatch is a new product for coloring plastics and fibers developed in the 1960s. It is a polymer compound prepared by uniformly loading an ultra-constant amount of pigment in a resin. The main components of color masterbatch product are colorant, carrier and dispersant. And it is mainly used in some pipes or plastic products. Then if there is excessive use of color masterbatch in the process of production, is there any effects for the products? In this article, we will talk about this issue. First of all, let us get to know the basic ingredients of color master batch.

What are the basic ingredients of color masterbatch?

The basic components of color masterbatch are as following.

1. Pigments or dyes

Usually color masterbatch pigments are divided into organic pigments and inorganic pigments. Commonly used organic pigments are phthalocyanine red, phthalocyanine blue, phthalocyanine green, light fast red, macromolecular red, macromolecular yellow, permanent yellow, permanent violet and azo red etc. Commonly used inorganic pigments are cadmium red, cadmium yellow, titanium dioxide, carbon black, iron oxide red, iron oxide yellow etc.

2. Carrier

The carrier is the matrix of the masterbatch. Special color masterbatches generally choose the same resin with the product resin as the carrier, since the compatibility between the two is the best. But the fluidity of the color masterbatch carrier should also be considered.

3. Dispersant

The role of color masterbatch dispersant is to promote the uniform dispersion of the pigment and no longer agglomerate. Usually the melting point of the dispersant should be lower than that of the resin, and it has good compatibility with the resin, and has a good affinity with the pigment. The most commonly used dispersants are polyethylene low-molecular wax and stearate.

4. Additives

The role of additives is flame-retardant, brightening, anti-bacterial, anti-static and anti-oxidation and so on. Generally the color masterbatch manufacturers will not add the above additives in the color masterbatch unless the customers require.

What is the effect of excessive use of color masterbatch?

We know that color masterbatch is a color mixture with high concentration, which can dye many products into the desired color. So, this material will be added in many pipe and plastic industries in the process of production. At the same time, it also can make the color of pipes or plastics become rich and colorful. But there is a problem followed. Is there the impact if excessive use of color mastertach? Generally speaking, it is depended by the quality and color function of the color masterbatch. If the proportion of special master batch does not exceed 20%, the problem is not very big. But if it is a general-purpose masterbatch and its base material is not ABS, it may affect the properties such as strength and heat resistance etc. In addition, if the white or black masterbatch is added too much in pipe processing, it will deepen the color. And excessive use will increase the production cost of the products. All in all, it is still necessary to control the using amount of color masterbatch.
